Sussex County CERT Team / Training / Volunteer Announcement

Many of you may have heard of the establishment of Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) after the developments of 9/11. CERT teams are Federally recognized teams of trained emergency responders, and in Sussex county, respond as part of the Sussex County Sheriff's Department.

I have been asked to inform you of the opportunity to get involved, and provide interested individuals with information about how to get involved. As I learned today, there are a variety of needs and skill sets, so many that "there is something for everyone to do".

To become involved in CERT, you must take a training class that provides you training on a variety of topics including: Disaster Preparedness, Medical Operations, Triage, Search and Rescue, CERT Team Organization, and Terrorism. The idea is that, after being trained, in the event of an emergency, CERT teams can be called upon to render help and assistance in everything from urban search and rescue, to staffing command posts, to helping triage after an accident, again, there is something for everyone to do, and remain in their particular comfort zone (no one is forced to do something they don't want to do).

The next training class is being held at Sussex County Community College, starts on Tuesday February 20th, meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:00 - 9:30, runs for 8 weeks, AND IS FREE FOR US TO ATTEND. At the conclusion of the class there is a full-scale exercise, and you receive a Federal CERT team certification and a Sussex County Sheriff's Department CERT team ID. Think how many of us were around after the Sparta flooding or 9/11 and wanted to do something? Now is your chance to get trained and certified to be able to help.

This is a great way to find some level of community involvement, get some free training and certification, and be a member of an important organization to assist people in times of need. I have tons more info on the program if anyone is interested. Also FYI: in the event we had say 10 or more interested people from Ski Patrol, the class could be provided on site at Mountain Creek.

Let me know if you are interested, I can sign you up, I'm going myself and know of at least one other that is thinking about going.

Federation Internationale des Patrouille de Ski (FIPS)
2007 Congress Update - Snowbird, April 21-28, 2007

Left to Right, FIPS Treasurer Mark Labow, FIPS President Bruce Lochhead,
ED DD Rick Hamlin, and FIPS Training Coordinator, Hugh Thomassin

On Saturday July 17, 2005 the officers of FIPS met with the Eastern Division Board of Directors to welcome the Eastern Division as a member of FIPS. As members of FIPS, Eastern Division members join Patrollers from the European, Intermountain, Rocky Mountain, Pacific Northwest, and European Divisions and patrollers from around the world who are eligible to attend the next meeting, referred to as a congress of FIPS members. These meetings are held every two years and the locations are moved around the world. This years meeting will be in the United States. The information about how to participate in the 2007 Congress is described below:

The Rocky Mountain Division has agreed to host the next FIPS Congress. It will be held at Snowbird Resort, Utah, April 21-28, 2007 (Saturday to Saturday). FIPS received a fantastic deal, $880, covering all transportation (but not airfare), meals, lodging and lift tickets (this assumes 2 people in a large 4 person room). This is the fee whether you are there one day or eight. For those who might want to come early or stay late, it is $109 per night for a four person room.

There are 100 slots allocated to the United States and FIPS is allocating 25 of these to the Eastern Division. Starting now, until April 1, 2006, FIPS will be accepting reservations with a $100 deposit (refundable until Fall 2006). From April 1 until July 1, 2006 any unused slots will be made available back to the four Divisions. After July 1, 2006 FIPS will make any open slots available to other Divisions. We encourage early sign-up so that if, for example, 30 people from Eastern sign up on April 1, 2006, those extra 5 would be moved to available slots. Full payment is due prior to November 1, 2006.

Additional registration information can be found here. The registration form can be found here.

NJ Region Patrollers Reinforce Local Search and Rescue

On Sunday, June 19, a small plane was lost in the Hamburg Mountain area of Sussex County, NJ. After 3 days of searching, neither the pilot nor plane had been found. On Wednesday morning, calls went out to the Ski Patrollers of the NJ Region for volunteers to reinforce the search effort. Many of our members responded.

Late Thursday afternoon, the body of the pilot and the wreckage of the plane were finally located within the densely wooded search area. The five days of searching reportedly involved over 200 searchers from more than 50 different agencies. Although specific details cannot be published, several NJ Region Patrollers were part of the multi-agency search team that found the crash site.

The NJ Region thanks the following individuals for their efforts and selflessness, as well as their willingness and ability to put their training to work. Although not everyone was deployed on a search team, these Patrollers answered this call to duty:

Jan Beliveau
Jo-Anne Beliveau
Bill Brown
Doreen Brown
  Debbie Cowell
Jim Cowell
Jim Ferlauto
Jeff Freidrichs
  Joni Hamilton
Roger Kirchner
Jeff Larsen
John Rovetto
  Eli Tepperberg
Bob Tunick

The Ski Patrollers of New Jersey made a valuable contribution to this effort and, as a group, made a big step in showing other agencies our capabilities. This experience has clearly shown that we have a lot to contribute in these kinds of situations. We hope that future involvement by the NJ Region will be welcome when needed.

Thanks again for a job well done!

What happened to the NSP shield on the NJ Region web site?

The National Board of Directors of the National Ski Patrol recently met at the end of June. At this meeting it was decided that no member may use the National Ski Patrol shield design in any manner without written permission from Stephen Over, Executive Director of the NSP. In accordance with this decision, the National Ski Patrol shield can no longer be displayed on the NJ Region web site.

More information on the most recent National Board of Directors meeting can be found in the letter from Rick Hamlin, Division Director, to the Region Directors of the Eastern Division .
